Profile

Appearance

Berdly resembles a large avian with blue feathers, a yellow beak, and yellow legs. He wears black framed glasses, a collared white button-up shirt with striped sleeves, and a black shirt layered underneath. Berdly's head can rotate 180 degrees, similar to an owl's.

In the Dark World, Berdly's feathers are a lighter shade of blue, and his scleras are bright green. He wears a "Smart Scouter" on his head that consists of an orange tinted lens and two white and green pointed headsets. His ensemble consists of an orange cape, futuristic white armor with pointed shoulder guards, bracers and leg armor. He wears a black bodysuit underneath this armor, and has green cloth wrapped around his waist. In battle, Berdly uses a green laser halberd with a yellow ax blade and yellow eyes embedded into the blade's head.

Personality

Berdly acts very sarcastic and arrogant. He projects great self-esteem, claiming to be the smartest student in his class. At first, he is shown to be very disdainful towards his fellow classmates (especially Susie), but has respect for Noelle, whom he considers the actual smartest student. Upon entering the Cyber World, Berdly's arrogance turns out to be more serious than previously realized, as he plans to create a Dark Fountain so he can build a world where he and Noelle are idolized.

Berdly feels immense pressure to appear intelligent, and he presents himself as such to others in many ways. He constantly brings up his academic success, and mocks Kris and Susie for their inferior performance.

Berdly is severely unaware of how others perceive him. For instance, he believes that Noelle, Susie and Kris are all in love with him and also fails to understand that Queen views him as her minion rather than an ally.

Despite his arrogance, Berdly is not as clever as he claims to be, as demonstrated by his difficulty in solving puzzles. He eventually confesses that he never really thought he was intelligent at all, and that he was only able to get good grades because Noelle helped him with his homework. His insecurities begin to eat him alive to the point where he cannot imagine how it would feel if he does not live up to the high expectations everyone has for him, or what would happen if he is unable to succeed without Noelle's help. After Susie reassures him that he doesn't need to be smart, Berdly decides he wants to be an idiot instead, much to her annoyance.

Though Berdly believes that his experience in the Dark World was a dream, his opinion of Kris and Susie somewhat softens afterwards, even going so far as to develop a crush on Susie and view her as some form of role model. He later expresses a desire to spend time with them, although he does so through a veil of sarcasm, unwilling to admit that he would want to interact with them.

Berdly is a huge fan of video games (excepting mobile games), especially Super Smashing Fighters. He makes many references to video games and video game terms, such as wavedashing, which he considers cheating, likely as a way to excuse failures. Berdly seeks a partner who shares this interest in video games. Berdly also makes references to other classic "nerdy" media, such as when he references Star Wars by saying "May the smarts... NOT be with you!"

During the Weird Route, upon meeting him after the Annoying Mouse Puzzle Room 3, Berdly demonstrates the capacity to understand the situation Noelle is in, and that he cares about her enough to fight the party and attempt to free her from the player's control. Berdly's attacks are stronger on this route. Although Berdly is often smirking in many of his sprites, including his normal battle sprites, he stops smirking and looks more serious in his Weird Route battle sprites.

Speech pattern

Berdly tends to speak in a formal and superior tone. This extends to how he refers to others, which includes calling Susie "Susan" and Noelle "dearest Noelle". Berdly also tends to make use of phrases that highlight his intellect. For example, multiple lines reference Berdly's "mind palace", referring to the method of loci, a technique where one pictures memories in a spatial environment to enhance recall. He occasionally misquotes these phrases however, such as when he mentions that "Even a broken clock is right once a day."[2]

Etymology

"Berdly" is a portmanteau of "bird", "nerd", descriptive of Berdly's appearance and personality, and the common given name ending "-ly".
